Have you ever watched the film, “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour? It is about a playwright who becomes obsessed with a young actress from year 1912. It’s the story about finding love somewhere back in time. It was one of my mother’s favorite films.
I have always been so fascinated by the late 1800’s, early 1900’s era. The beauty, the simplicity of life, and the antiquity of it. I’ve always imagined myself wearing petticoats and gowns, stockings held up by garters, a lovely bonnet or hat, ruffles and dresses that created a beautiful silhouette. Taking a stroll in the park or sitting in a horse drawn carriage on my way to a tea party. When I visit historical sites and walk through the gardens, the houses, barns, trails, etc., I imagine life with them. It’s like entering into time travel.
Thoughts of our past become a memory that can bring hurt, pain, or sadness. Our memories can also bring joy, peace and happiness. Everything that we experience is used for a greater purpose to either teach us something, reveal a truth or to propel us into God’s calling in our life. Just like old buildings crumble, the places, people and things of the past slip into only a memory.
Hebrews 13:8 (NLT) “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.”
God never changes. He was the same in the 1800’s as He is today! His existence extends endlessly in the past as it will in the future. It’s easy to forget a memory of the past until something triggers a thought. He will never cease to exist and that is a truth that cannot be forgotten.
Psalm 90:2 (TPT) “Long before you gave birth to the earth and before the mountains were born, you have been from everlasting to everlasting, the one and only true God.”
As we take walks down memory lane to somewhere in time, let’s focus on the one thought that can give us life when we struggle with affliction. God is, God was and God will always be there somewhere in time. He has never left us.
“Memory was meant not only for private wandering into forgotten shadows, but also to remind us who God is.” - unknown author
